We analyze three main segments in our consumer forecasts:

- Switched access: This line item includes spending on fixed telephone line rental, telephone calls (including calls made to mobiles, dial-up internet calls and other nonstandard calls such as premium-rate calling) and value-added elements, such as call waiting services.

- Broadband: This item includes spending on services provisioned using DSL, cable modem or alternative broadband technologies, such as fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and broadband wireless. It currently includes expenditures only on the basic monthly subscription and any volume or time-based spending, and does not include spending on value-added elements, such as home networks or entertainment products.

- Analog and digital TV: This includes all spending directly by consumers on cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV. It does not include indirect spending on interactive services, such as TV-based gambling or revenue from advertising. Our forecast seeks to measure pay-TV subscribers in three categories: analog or basic subscribers, digital subscribers and DTH satellite subscribers.

We divide the world into four regions: (1) North America, (2) Latin America, (3) Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and (4) Asia-Pacific.
