The Taiwanese WLAN Industry, 3Q 2004 and Beyond

The Taiwanese WLAN industry posted an impressive 75.2% year-on-year gain in the third quarter of 2004, driven by a new peak in global notebook PC shipments, built-in WLAN shipment share increases, and the strong sales season. Demand in global retail markets recovered from the first half of the year; the three largest retail channel players all registered shipment increases. Shipment share of notebook PCs adopting Centrino rose and shipment volume of wireless broadband network equipment saw healthy growth, bringing Taiwanese WLAN shipments to a new high. In the fourth quarter, with seasonal effects and built-in WLAN modules shipments to notebook PC makers scaling peaks in September and October, Taiwanese WLAN makers will see continued shipment growth. However, factors such as rising oil prices and fading consumer confidence will likely have negative impacts.
