Global Market Review of Automotive Steering Systems Forecasts to 2013
just-auto, July 2007, Pages: 60
just-auto predicts that some 10.7m electric power steering (EPS) systems will be fitted to vehicles built in Western Europe by 2013.
For many years, power steering technology was focused on hydraulic systems but demand is now favouring EPS, mainly due to fuel consumption and logistical benefits. Electric power steering systems effectively eliminate the traditional hydraulic system's power steering pump, hoses, hydraulic fluid, and drive belt and pulley on the engine.
Given these benefits, the tide has turned in favour of EPS over the past decade, although estimates of future penetration levels of EPS by region vary, there is complete agreement that the trend is upwards.
The only disagreements concern the slope of the trend and at what level it might plateau. In Western Europe, just-auto estimates that about 6.1m new passenger cars and light trucks will be equipped with either rack drive, pinion drive or column drive EPS in 2007. That is up from 3.3m vehicles in 2003.
In this fourth edition of the steering systems report, just-auto reviews the key market drivers for automotive steering systems, and updates the market analysis. A technical review looks at trends in electric power steering and four-wheel steering, plus, we evaluate the emerging markets Russia, Poland, India and China. Interviews with key executives are included throughout the report, and we provide top level market fitment, volume and value forecasts through to 2013.
Chapter 1: Introduction
We provide a brief overview of the market.
Chapter 2: The Market
This chapter provides estimates for 2003 to 2013 predicting the market (by volume and value) in Western Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific for steering systems by type, i.e. rack drive, pinion drive and column drive electric power steering, electrically-powered hydraulic steering, power rack and pinion steering and recirculating ball systems.
Interviews with key executives, such as Eberhard Kubler, chief engineer, car steering systems, ZF Lenksysteme GmbH and Wolfgang Bongarth, supervisor, steering car technology and CI steering at Ford-Werke GmbH are included, along with commentary on market players and emerging markets.
Chapter 3: Technical review
The steering system has a significant influence on vehicle performance and reliability. Electric and hydraulic power steering systems with a motor-driven pump are superior to conventional hydraulic power steering in regard to both efficiency and size. In this chapter we review recent technical advances in electric power steering and four-wheel steering, plus, with steering technology evolving at an incredible rate, providing a level of functionality unthinkable a decade ago, we take a look at what we can expect from 'tomorrow's steering systems'.
Chapter 4: Manufacturers
We provide profiles of the major manufacturers, namely: JTEKT Corporation, NSK, Showa Corporation, ThyssenKrupp Automotive, TRW Automotive and ZF Lenksysteme. Information includes production facilities, products, and mergers and acquisitions.
