Western Europe E-Commerce
eMarketer, Aug 2005, Pages: 15
The Western Europe E-Commerce report analyzes the retail e-commerce marketplace in Western Europe in general, and in the UK, Germany and France in particular.
The UK economy is the bright spot among the large Western European economies, reflected in retail e-commerce sales worth $26.4 billion in 2004, up 32% over 2003, compared to 25% growth for US e-commerce in the same period.
Germany is a different story. Domestic consumption has been sluggish. Still, taken together, the UK and Germany accounted for 61% of total online retail sales in Western Europe last year.
Online purchasing in France surged by some 50% in 2004, but the French, like the Spanish and Italians to the south, seem less enthusiastic about online commerce than some other Europeans.
Nevertheless, during the 2004-2008 period, it is estimated that US retail e-commerce sales will grow by 18.5%, compared to 41% for the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain combined—which makes Europe an attractive opportunity for US online merchants.
