Introduction
Sony has dominated the 128-bit console market, with the PS2 accounting for approximately 70% of sales over the past five years. However, the video games console market is about to enter a new phase, with Microsoft and Nintendo hoping that their next-generation offerings can gain a greater share of sales.

Scope
Examines the development of the next-generation console sector, evaluating the factors that will determine success and forecasting uptake until 2010.

Compares the three next-generation consoles in terms of their functionality, launch dates, online potential and developer support.

Forecasts console installed base (by platform and geography) and global hardware/software revenues from 2005 to 2010.

Report Highlights
Despite the early launch of the Xbox 360, we expect the PS3 to be the leading console by the end of 2007; a combination of its huge success with the PS2 and strong publisher support will ensure Sony retains top spot. Microsofts new console will also fare well, accounting for around 30% of the total installed base by the end of 2010.

Online gaming will become increasingly prevalent over the next five years due to growing broadband penetration and improved service offerings from console manufacturers and games publishers. Microsoft has forged a leading role in the online sector, and will build on the relative success of its Xbox Live service to steal a march on the competition.

The next-generation console market will peak in 2008, when it will generate total revenues (hardware + software) of $21.9 billion. Software revenues will continue to rise until 2010, at which point sales will reach $16.8 billion.
