One of the most striking features of digital music is the lack of a standard that would allow universal interoperability between services and devices. In the digital music world, interoperability comes with conditions which normally tie the consumer to one flavour of delivery platform.

The key question for the industry is to what extent such conditions might put a brake on the development of the market?

For instance, when the market reaches individuals who are tech-adverse and intolerant of usage problems, the effect of the small print might be to force them back to buying CDs. For such individuals, maybe digital music will resemble a test drive that ended in disappointment and frustration.

This report aims to answer this question by firstly looking at the fundamental market forces that define whether a new technology industry converges around a single, agreed standard or splinters into rival, incompatible platforms. Next, the report uses the analogy of the console gaming industry to gauge the possible and likely outcomes for the digital music business.

The report also looks at whether the ultimate size of the industry is likely to be affected by lack of interoperability, the effect of regulation, especially by the European Commission, the likely impact on the rate of growth of the industry and whether the unique characteristics of digital music mean that a standard would limit innovation in services and content.
