High-end personal digital assistant and organizer devices (PDA) systems are evolvingas communicators. The ability to connect to the Internet with data capability is an essential aspect of 3G systems. The installed base of wireless handsets at 1.2 billion dwarfs the installed base of 31 million PDA systems.

The economies of scale mean that PDA systems will be eclipsed by high-end wireless handsets. The wireless handset needs the functionality of a PDA to be able to be useful for communicating data. PDA systems without communication capability will continue to be flat and decline, despite lower prices. The high-end wireless handsets devices will get smarter as the PDA systems include wireless communication capability.

The market for enterprise and consumer communicators and smartphones is highly competitive. Competition is expected to increase. Market participants need to be able to respond rapidly to emerging technologies. Resources for development, promotion, and sale of products are a significant issue. Markets for enterprise and consumer PDA devices at $1.77 billion in 2003 are expected to reach to $3 billion by 2009. As the PDA feature sets broaden, the combined PDA enterprise and consumer unit shipment markets grow to 17.3 million by 2009.
