The Pharmaceutical Market: Switzerland
Espicom Business Intelligence Ltd, Sep 2008, Pages: 77
Switzerland is one of the richest healthcare markets in the world. Historically decentralised, there is now a wide degree of national oversight of the market, principally by Swissmedic. Reimbursement of pharmaceuticals is primarily through health insurance. This is run by a number of schemes, usually on a regional (cantonal) basis. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but has aligned much of its regulatory system with EU directives. The country is home to two major international manufacturers, Novartis and Roche. Behind these there is a large number of small research-based companies, biotechs and contract manufacturers. Generics are beginning to be more widely used than in the past, following a number of government reforms since 2001.
The Swiss government has been as keen as any other in recent years to contain costs in the healthcare sector. A number of specific measures have been taken to rein in costs, and the promotion of generics has been at the forefront, with spectacular success since 2001. The generic market grew very rapidly between 2002 and 2006.
