THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET: SWITZERLAND - REVIEW

The Swiss pharmaceutical industry is highly advanced and has long had an international reputation for the quality of its production and research. Two local companies dominate the sector; Novartis and Roche. They are both prominent in the domestic market, although the majority of their sales are earned outside Switzerland. Swiss pharmaceutical exports exceed US$43 billion; the balance of pharmaceutical trade is positive and has demonstrated an upward trend since 2000.

By international standards, the Swiss generic market remains uncompetitive. Over 70% of generic sales are made by two companies; Mepha, acquired by Cephalon in April 2010, and Sandoz. A more competitive environment would almost certainly lead to lower price levels. However, the government’s policy of period price reductions may prove counterproductive in this regard, by making the market less attractive for new players and entrenching the position of the existing manufacturers. A few other companies, notably Teva, Actavis and Sanofi (through Winthrop), are active in the market, but to date have not gained much market share.

There have been several acquisitions by Swiss pharmaceutical companies recently. In April 2011, Novartis completed its merger with Alcon, which is now the new eye care division of Novartis. Previously, in December 2010, Novartis bought the remaining stake in Alcon for US$168 per share, totalling US$12.9 billion. In the biologic sector, Lonza acquired Arch Chemicals for US$1.2 billion in July 2011. In July 2010, Actelion entered a binding agreement to acquire French company Trophos, which specialises in neurodegenerative diseases.
