Novo Nordisk is a biotech-based healthcare company with the broadest diabetes product portfolio in the industry and a world leader in diabetes care. In addition, it has a leading position in haemostasis management, growth hormone therapy and hormone replacement therapy. It is currently expanding into the new therapeutic areas of cancer and inflammation. Its products are marketed in 179 countries.

Novo Nordisk has a clear strategy of sustaining its lead in the diabetes area and strengthening its global presence. With the projected decline in sales of the haemostasis agent NovoSeven, Novo Nordisk is intent on expanding its biopharmaceuticals business, and growth hormone therapy should continue as an important growth driver. To become more competitive it is also expanding into the new therapeutic area of inflammation. However, since its strategy is to take early-stage compounds through the development process, rather than in-license existing products, it will be at least 10 years before the company will begin to see substantial returns within this therapeutic area. Furthermore, Novo Nordisk has recently abandoned similar ambitions to develop an oncology portfolio, therefore, will be quite reliant on having more success within inflammation.

The impact of Novo Nordisk discontinuing its involvement in the inhaled insulin iDMS programme will be mixed. The loss of the project is a loss in terms of the company's pipeline and research investment, however the move was in line with a pharmaceutical sector wide trend of dropping inhaled insulin programmes and removal of this novel insulin product eliminates a potential competitive threat to Novo Nordisk's current insulin products.
