Zenith's 2007 Drinks Biopackaging report is based on detailed research into the opportunities and threats facing the underdeveloped yet emerging use of bioplastics for the beverage industry. Zenith's outline findings are that:
- In order to implement a shift towards biodegradable packaging, the global beverage industry requires the support of government and municipal bodies at a country-by-country level. - A reduction in sales tax on drinks biopackaging would help present economies of scale for what remains an embryonic industry. - In addition, the beverage industry requires government-backed programmes to maximise the use of compostable plastic bottles, and ensure that the necessary infrastructure is put in place. - Biopackaging does present a genuine opportunity for increased sustainability in drinks packaging. Yet, the beverage industry requires appropriate support and necessary systems to separate bioplastics from existing PET recycling and waste management processes. - Separated bioplastic bottles would then need to be integrated into large scale commercial composting facilities. - Bioplastics have made major in-roads in a range of application areas, from shopping bags through to bioplastic film. Without government incentives and support for the use of bioplastic bottles – a major new product development opportunity is at risk of being squandered.
