This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Markets for FPGA, DSP, and ASIC in Medical Imaging Equipment discusses the trends and provides the market analysis of FPGA, DSP, and ASIC in the medical imaging equipment market. The research also discusses market dynamics that include industry challenges, market drivers and restraints, key market and technology trends, and competitive analysis of FPGA, DSP, and ASIC in the medical imaging equipment market. Based on the interplay of identified challenges, drivers, and restraints, unit shipment and revenue forecasts and unit shipment forecasts by application and package type are provided. In this research, Frost & Sullivan’s expert analyst thoroughly examines the following markets: X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography including PET/CT and single photon emission computed tomography, and ultrasound.

FPGA Drawing Increased Revenues from Its Enhanced Capabilities and Widespread Deployments

Medical imaging equipment, in different modalities, requires varying processing capabilities based on their data acquisition principles and algorithms used in image processing. 'Most of these applications demand high-power computing, involving a combination of mathematical and logical operators, coupled with efficient memory access,' says the analyst of this research service. 'Hence, the advantage of field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in digital signal processing has attracted many equipment manufacturers to implement this system.'

The current trend is to use a mix of FPGA and digital signal processor (DSP) for data acquisition and filtering, and image processing. The growing demand for high resolutions has led to the fusion of diagnostic modes and algorithm advances. Moreover, portable monitoring devices requiring greater device intelligence and communications than previous equipment are finding increasing favor in the market.

FPGA, DSP, and ASIC Can Preserve Their Markets with Their Unique Capabilities

Although FPGAs are beginning to replace DSPs in most applications, there exists a trend to use them as co-processors. However, DSPs still have a healthy market with a small reduction in the number of units used. While FPGA is preferred for most of the computing, DSP is being used for its complementing capabilities to offload some of the computations done prior to the image processing. Some medical original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) prefer to use application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to implement specific functionalities in their equipment.

'Semiconductor vendors for FPGA, DSP, and ASIC must address the growing requirements of the medical imaging industry by integrating multiple channels and increasing the capabilities of programmable logic with a huge number of logic cells and multiple DSP block capabilities,' explains the analyst. 'Companies also need to target their markets specifically with products that can reduce time to market and reduce complexity in implementation.'
