World Digital Broadcast and Cinematography Cameras Market
Frost & Sullivan, Oct 2009, Pages: 48
The Launch of Feature-rich Cameras Puts Rapid Revenue Growth in the Picture for the Digital Broadcast and Cinematography Cameras Market
Digital cameras are great favorites with broadcasters and professionals all over the world due to their advantages of digitization, tapeless workflows, and HD. Though the recession has diluted the demand in 2009, the launch of highly feature-rich cameras at competitive prices for all segments is likely to set the stage for future growth in not just the cinematography segment, but also broadcast television. The ENG and field production sector continues to experience an increasing influx of a large spectrum of tapeless products in HD. While some regions are already ahead of the curve, having adopted HD camera systems, several broadcasters are gearing up to upgrade to digital and HD acquisition products over the next three to four years. Nowadays, professionals have access to a highly evolved digital workflow of products (including ingest, processing, and export) that is compatible with new format cameras. Thanks to the availability of such supporting technologies, the demand for professional digital cameras now does not stop with just HD tapeless recording abilities.
'The market is likely to see an increasing number of lighter equipment with highly evolved features such as 2K or 4K recording; 3D integration, wireless transmission, and others,' says the analyst of this research. 'More importantly, these features-intensive products are expected to be available at highly competitive prices.' Attractive prices have encouraged customers to invest in next-generation technologies. The breakthrough of 2K and 4K cameras at one-third the prices of high-end cameras for digital cinema in 2007 and the subsequent growth in their popularity among professionals worldwide have disrupted trends in the professional cameras market.
Price-feature combination is gradually becoming an important purchase decision in the previously niche and premium product segment. Though the professional video cameras market is not commoditized yet and customers still value quality over price, there is increasing pressure on vendors to respond with advanced features, at much lower prices than they commanded two to three years ago. 'Considering that professionals globally are willing to invest in digital high-resolution products, the increased and faster turnover of products to match this price-feature combination is likely to facilitate greater market expansion and revenue growth,' notes the analyst. 'Top vendors have already captured a substantial user base with their wide range of products across all ENG and prosumer segments, but continue to offer their products for the cinema and studio at a much higher premium.'
For the market to continue launching cutting-edge technologies, customers should be quick to adapt to them and the workflows surrounding them. While the market incumbents continue to upgrade their products in response to customer demands, it is the small emerging vendors that have been at the forefront of product advancements. Therefore, the growth of the market will depend on their ability to sustain their business with continued innovations and aggressive marketing to create awareness in the professional niche segment. 'In a highly mature market, vendors have to pay attention to not just customer convenience but also innovate with features that can enable customers gain a higher creative edge,' remarks the analyst. 'For this, larger vendors will need to match the energies and strategy of the smaller vendors to tap the unused market potential.'
