Early in 2009 Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Ltd and Vodafone Australia agreed to merge their Australian mobile telecommunications businesses. Hutchison, through its 3 brand, launched Australia’s first 3G network and services. The combined entity will provide coverage to 63% of the population with 3G services and to 95% of the population with 2G services. Previously Hutchison was the fourth largest mobile service provider in Australia which included operating a Third Generation (3G) Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) network - in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra, Werribee, Geelong, Campbelltown, Frankston and Wollongong, branded ‘3’.
