Unwired currently provides a type of proprietary pre-WiMAX wireless broadband Internet services to the residential, SOHO and SME markets, which have the ability to handle voice and data communications. The company uses technology developed by US-based Navini Networks (now part of Cisco). Unwired has acquired sufficient spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4-3.5GHz ranges, to enable it to deliver broadband Internet access, VoIP telephony and multimedia communications to approximately 64% of the Australian population. By 2008, Unwired’s network was covering most of Sydney and 35% of Melbourne. Having initially targeted an early 2008 rollout for mobile WiMAX based on the its’ 802.16e stand, Unwired has now pushed back plans, to possibly to sometime before mid-2009.
