Korea is widely considered the world’s most wired nation. According to survey data, out of 47 million Koreans, more than 26 million are regular internet users, and Korea is in the top bracket in international comparisons of users per capita.

North America has often been viewed as the global center for broadband development. Residential cable modem service drove the broadband revolution in the late 1990s and
the 1996 Telecom Act gave birth to competitive carriers focused on driving DSL into the small business space. However, beginning in 2000, the United States and Canada’s
broadband supremacy was challenged and then surpassed by a number of countries in Asia-Pacific, and now Europe is undergoing enormous subscriber growth.

With its size and market potential, China has captured the most attention, but its southern neighbor South Korea has been the overwhelming leader in broadband adoption.

Today, as we follow the transformation of basic internet activities such as web browsing and e-mail to advance broadband applications, Korea continues to prove itself as the most advanced broadband nation in the world. Online gaming, community sites, avatar technology and the blending of online and offline activity can provide a window into the potential of broadband applications for the rest of the world.
