There are many different B2B standards and methods, and partners must negotiate and accommodate each other to enable communication. Most enterprises support multiple
communication channels with their partners and customers, and continue to add new methods.

Use of B2B technology has exploded in the last two decades as businesses tap into IT, networking and internet technology to extend access and lower costs. Large enterprises are managing thousands of partner networks. Secure internet-based communication, secure content delivery and remote access are integral to competing for business today. The lines between partners and employees also are blurring as outsourcing grows to encompass entire business processes. The Yankee Group 2003 Enterprise Security Spending Survey showed that 24% of all business partners have remote access to the corporate network.

Two technology trends—the increasing reliance on internet for cheap access and the need for remote access driven by outsourcing—are shifting the focus of traditional B2B
solutions away from static data formats sent over private networks. The trends are moving toward more flexible service-oriented architectures and SSL VPN technology to meet enterprise needs for well-managed B2B access.

The evolution of B2B communications shows this progression from dumb pipe to smart pipe, enabling complex applications such as distributed order processing and RFID. In this Yankee Group report, we examine drivers behind a new market for B2B gateways and SSL VPN solutions providing cheap and secure transport.
