Technological Innovations to Boost U.S. Industrial Enzymes Market

Manufacturers of paper and pulp, textile, leather, detergents, wastewater treatment chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and bio ethanol are increasingly replacing harsh chemicals with industrial enzymes to achieve cost and process benefits and superior product performance. Industrial enzyme producers will have to continuously offer superior and innovative products to sustain this pace of demand. They will have to draw upon the technological breakthroughs in various segments to lure reluctant users toward enzyme technologies and thereby, tap the huge latent potential of the market.

Manufacturers are unable to make equal investments in each segment. For instance, while bio ethanol and pharmaceuticals obtain significant funding, the paper and pulp and wastewater treatment segments have to make do with much less. This greatly hampers product development activities in the overall market. 'Manufacturers can circumvent this situation by strategically leveraging the breakthrough achieved in bio ethanol and pharmaceutical enzymes in other segments,' says the analyst of this research. 'For example, the state-of-art technologies developed for increasing the specificity and efficiency of enzymes developed in the pharmaceutical arena can be leveraged for the development of enzymes for other applications also.'

Bio Ethanol and Bio Pharmaceuticals Industries Prop up the Industrial Enzymes Market

The prospects of the U.S. industrial enzymes market appear bright as its mainstay application segment, bio ethanol, received a shot in the arm with the passing of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) bill by the Department of Energy (DoE). According to the bill, by 2015, bio ethanol production should reach 15 billion gallons and this augurs well for the bio ethanol enzyme segment. 'Going by the bill of materials, average enzyme costs for the production of one gallon of bio ethanol is approximately 3 cents and this translates to huge profits,' notes the analyst. 'With respect to the pharmaceutical industry, enzymes remain a major mode of treatment for thrombolytics and cystic fibrosis and also play a major role as catalysts in the manufacturing of intermediaries.'

Despite the inadequate understanding of the chemistry of enzymes on different woods, the paper and pulp enzymes segment has the potential to grow to at least five times the present size. A typical chemicals supplier generates huge revenues and can easily afford to deploy sufficient manpower to handle customers better. However, insufficient revenue and expertise in other chemicals segments prevent enzyme manufacturers from deploying manpower exclusively for handling customers, which hinders new product development. The market shift toward developing nations such as China, reluctance of customers to modify their process to include enzymes, bio sensitization properties of enzymes on humans, and market maturity in certain segments are curtailing the market from achieving its true potential. However, market participants can still score over chemical companies by promoting their products’ significantly higher energy and cost savings. They could also position their products’ ability to reduce the consumption of chemicals and thereby, lower the waste generated by the products.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled U.S. Industrial Enzymes Market provides an overview of revenues, as well as analysis of key challenges and forecasts at the segment level. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the markets for the following application segments: bio ethanol, pharmaceuticals, paper and pulp, wastewater treatment, detergents, textile and leather enzymes, together with the application, product and pricing analysis for both the food and feed enzymes market at the segment level.
