Polyvinyl alcohol is a white powder. Its molecular formula is a (C2H4O) n and the English abbreviation is PVA. It is the only water soluble high molecular polymer currently known, and is polymerized by vinyl acetate (VAM) through alcoholysis. Its performance is unique and it can resist mineral oils, grease, lubricant and most organic solvents; it can not absorb sound but can accurately transmit sound and at the same time has a good bonding strength, membrane flexibility and smoothness, oil resistance, solvent resistance, protective colloid, gas blocking, wear resistance, as well as water resistance after special treatment.
PVA with a wide range of uses, is mainly used for the production of vinylon fiber and is also increasingly used for non-fiber products. Its downstream products include vinylon, coatings, adhesives, fiber pulp, paper handling agent, emulsifier, dispersant, film, medical materials and construction automobile modified materials, with the application areas involving textiles, food, medicine, construction, wood processing, paper making, printing, agriculture, metallurgical industries and others. New products and applications are constantly in development.
