Analysis of Animal Vaccine Market in China 2009
China Market Report, May 2009, Pages: 30
The development of animal vaccine industry in developed countries is relatively matured with relative perfectible regulation of animal immunization and the demand for animal vaccines remains stable normally. In contrast, the vaccine market in developing countries has a greater room for development, such as China, the improvement of people's standard of living led to the increasing demand for meat products which promoted the rapid development of animal husbandry. The huge number of livestock will require a large number of demands for animal vaccines; at the same time, the national animal epidemic prevention system is also more regulated, therefore, the rising awareness of prevention and the restriction of government regulation will as engine to stimulate the demand of animals vaccines. China is a large country of animal husbandry, the enormous livestock leads to a huge demand of animal vaccines. China's annual slaughter of pigs is more than 600 million, cattle 50 million, 300 million sheep and poultry 10 billion, in addition to a large number of breeding hens and more than 10 million milk cows. The breeding stock and slaughter numbers of major livestock such as, pigs, cattle and sheep has remained stable generally, thus, the number for livestock’s immunization need is very large.
China’s animal vaccine is broadly divided into two markets; one is the planning immunization products procured by government and the other is products sold in market. In terms of the Government has the major responsibility for epidemic prevention, so the planning immunization products constitute the main body of animal vaccine market. Therefore, in China there is a procurement chain for animal vaccine that is government funding - production – local government tendering - free distribution.
In 2000, the capacity of Chinese animal vaccine market was approximately 1 billion yuan, after the Ministry of Agriculture in 2004 approved 9 manufacturers to produce bird flu vaccine, and the foot and mouth disease Asia-I vaccine added to the planning immunization product, the market expanded rapidly to about 2.5 billion yuan; moreover, the Blue ear pig disease epidemic in 2007 also raised the animal vaccine market space.
On December 31, 2008, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a list of I, II, III three types of animal disease with 147 various species, among of them, I consists 17 types of disease need for the implementation of compulsory vaccination measures, but, presently, only a few animal vaccines is compulsory implemented by government, such as highly pathogenic bird flu, foot and mouth disease, high pathogenic blue ear disease, swine plague, thus, the compulsory animal vaccination in China will have a great room.
