Over the past couple of decades, plastics have replaced materials such as glass, metals and paper and the former has become an integral part of our everyday life. They are used in manufacturing stationary, window panes, bottles for beverages and dash boards of automobiles. Technological advancement which led to the development of thermoplastics resulted in the expansion of the application scope of plastics and presently, they are used in almost all market segments.

Plastics, also known as polymers, can be modified into any shape and size. Addition of additives such as pigments gives the final product a superior aesthetic value. Plastics can be altered to different specifications by the application of various molding technologies such as injection molding, blow molding, rotomolding and extrusion molding among others. Different industries require finished goods made from any of the above mentioned technologies.Growing research and development activities on plastics resulted in increasing substitution of other materials including glass, paper, wood and metals by plastics. A key factor such as reduction in weight which led to improved vehicle efficiency and reduction in consumption of fuel, led to a visible growth in consumption of plastics in automobiles.

In addition, stringent regulations such as EURO 5 and EURO 6 norms regarding vehicular emissions are expected to fuel the demand for plastics in automobiles. Furthermore, increasing use of plastics in mobile phones to improve aesthetic value of the device coupled with the growth of the mobile phone industry is expected to contribute significantly to the molded plastics demand over the next few years. However, depleting resources of crude oil led to a fluctuation in the prices of their downstream products, affecting the growth of the market adversely. Molded polyethylene was the highest consumed polymer in 2012, accounting for nearly 30% of the market share. Polyethylene is primarily used in packaging of various goods including food & beverages, medical equipment, heavy machinery and electronics among others.
