Engineering plastics that are used in medical and healthcare applications are termed as medical polymers. These fibers and resins, elastomers and biodegradable materials possess qualities such as low weight, biocompatibility, that are suitable for medical applications. Medical devices, implants and equipment are used extensively and the demand for medical polymers is thus increasing due to their biocompatibility in these applications. Medical polymers are usually used in spinal implants, hip & joint replacements and implants for cranial injuries.

Growing demand for medical devices, an increasing ageing populations and a growing preference towards home healthcare treatment are some of the factors that have been driving the market in the past few years. Similarly, elastomers such as styrene block copolymers (SBCs), rubber latex and others (TPO, TPU and TPV) are in great demand as well. Of these, rubber latex is expected to occupy the largest share in the market.
