Cellulose Ethers Market by Derivative (Methyl, Ethyl, Hydroxyethyl, Hydroxypropyl & Carboxymethyl Cellulose), by Application (Pharmaceuticals, Personal Care, Construction, Food & Beverages, Surface Coatings & Paints) & by Geography - Global Trends & Forecasts to 2019

Cellulose ethers are high-molecular-weight compounds that are produced by the etherification process of cellulose. During the etherification process, three free OH groups of a single anhydroglucose cellulose unit are substituted. Cellulose has strong cohesion between the individual cellulose fibers because of the huge number of strong hydrogen bonds that make them water insoluble. The other important properties playing a major role for any cellulose ether to be chosen for any particular application are viscosity in solution, surface tension, solubility, and stability against biodegradation, heat, hydrolysis, and oxidation. All these properties are generally dependent on the substituent group of the parent cellulose and the degree of substitution, chemical structure, and the molecular weight of the parent cellulose.

Cellulose ethers are derived from natural cellulose as a base material. Cellulose is obtained from the pulp of trees. Properties shown by cellulose ether are rheology, viscosity increment, water retention, solubility, and many more. As cellulose ethers are natural substance, they are approved for a wide variety of applications such as construction, food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care.

The cellulose ethers and its derivatives market was estimated at $4,124.17 million in 2013 and is expected to grow by 7.08% until 2019.

Different types of cellulose ethers are used for different applications based on the desired property by end user. These cellulose ethers are produced by modifying the cellulose backbone with a wide range of substitute groups. The major types of cellulose ether available in the market are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), methyl cellulose (MC) and its derivatives (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (HEMC)), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), and ethyl cellulose (EC).

Each type of cellulose ether varies widely in terms of application and pricing. CMC has the largest volume market among all types of cellulose ethers but it has the lowest pricing. The prices for cellulose ethers, used mainly for critical applications such as food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care industry, are high. Different types of cellulose ethers are used in different industries according to the specific properties. For example, the largest application for CMC is construction while HEC has the majority of its application in paints and coatings.

Cellulose ethers are an economic substitute in many of the industries in which it is used. The rapidly increasing demand of cellulose ethers in its highly growing end-user industries is driving the cellulose ether market. In most of the industries, it is used as a binder, emulsifier, stabilizer, thickener, film former, adhesion promoter, and so on.

Different cellulose ether producers manufacture different types of cellulose ethers for different applications. The major players in the cellulose ether market are Ashland Specialty Chemicals (U.S.), The Dow Chemical Company (U.S.), CP Kelco (U.S.), Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Japan), Akzo Nobel Performance Additives (Netherlands), Samsung Fine Chemicals (Korea), and China RuiTai International Holdings Co. Ltd. (China).

In 2013, Asia-Pacific accounted for almost 40% of the global cellulose ether volume market. However, the pricing of cellulose ether is cheaper in the Asia-Pacific region in comparison to other regions; hence, it holds a lesser share in the cellulose ether value market. Europe follows Asia-Pacific in terms of consumption.

Asia-Pacific shows the highest growth rate for all types of cellulose ethers while the lowest growth rate is seen in the mature North American region. The only application in which cellulose ether is showing significant growth in North America is the oil and gas application.

Major players in the cellulose ether market are expanding in the Asia-Pacific region to compete with the rapidly growing Chinese players in terms of pricing.
