Unmanned aerial vehicles are at the early stages of an industry life cycle, and they are not new to the inventories of the armed forces, the civil applications and security forces. The first UAV was developed and operated by Samuel Pierpont Langley, in 1896. The global UAV market is currently valued at $7,098.6 million.

Development of UAVs was stalled until World War II, when progress was too slow to contribute to the war. BQM-34 was developed in the 1950s and mostly used for photo-reconnaissance. More recently, UAVs have developed along two very distinct paths.

Global Hawk has been engineered for intense range and altitude, making them quite large. In contrast, the Black Widow, which has a wingspan of only six inches, was developed to be slight with the ability to go to places out of reach for the armed personnel. Past experience can be used to chart the course for future development. Revolutions in technologies such as signal and image processing and sensors can be leveraged to permit UAVs to assume a larger role in military combats.

The Air Forces of every country would thrive to showcase their operational prowess of UAVs. According to US Air Force, ten types of UAVs were used in 'Operation Iraqi Freedom'. These UAVs were able to perform traditional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance as well as a range of more novel strategic combat. UAV's most envied attribute is persistence. Civilian and security personnel can use portable UAVs to scan their areas of operations, enabling them to achieve tactical revelation.

This range of UAV sizes provides a wide gamut of potential uses. The market can be estimated to grow at 3.30% during the period of 2013 to 2018.
