A very interactive specialist analysis tool with advanced graphics.

Spotfire, a small Swedish company, has been around for over ten years now and was acquired in June 2007 by Tibco, a larger California-headquartered organization known for its SOA technology. However, the sales team remains independent as Tibco is determined to maintain the old Spotfire structures, making very few changes in the organization and marketing of Spotfire.

Spotfire's emphasis on visual analysis is plain to see. Charts are a strength of the product, especially the level of user interactivity which, apart from being a plus in itself, serves to increase the otherwise marginal value of several chart features. A detailed evaluation of the front-end functionality and ease-of-use of Tibco Spotfire is included in the review.

As both products are oriented around the concept of a single data context which can be viewed by multiple user-defined reports, Tibco Spotfire often finds itself on shortlists with QlikView. However, there is no clear-cut winner. For instance, while Spotfire offers superior OLAP-style drilling and slicing, QlikView deals better with complex joins in the data. This review compares the products in other important areas and offers guidance on which types of users and needs would be satisfied best by each product.
