The global electronic warfare market is estimated to be $12.15 billion in 2014 and is expected to register a CAGR of 4.50% to reach $15.59 billion by 2020.

The main purpose of an EW system is ensuring the survivability of the platform, land-based, naval or airborne; and providing electronic cover for units at the frontline. A typical system can perform tasks like electronic attack, electronic support, and electronic protection. Need for spectrum control and evolution of systems into smaller systems have been the main driving forces for the market. Over the years, the system has become a vital necessity since there are no defined borders within the electromagnetic spectrum.

The wide range of threats like stealth aircrafts, GPS jamming and RCIED that are currently present is a driving factor for EW systems. Furthermore there is a future threat of hypersonic platforms and cruise missiles. Since battle space is moving from the traditional battlefield to the urban environment, the challenge will to ensure efficient management of the spectrum. The threat of all these entities forced nations to acquire or develop a suitable system.

Though U.S. and the U.K. have been the biggest markets for electronic warfare systems, the recent economic scenario has seen defense budget cuts in these markets. Emerging economies like Brazil and India look more attractive. Key markets like Republic of Korea, Australia, and Canada can drive the growth of the market. China remains a tough market to crack with strict government regulations in the defense sector, indigenous programs, and copyright issues with respect to military hardware and technology. Russia, with respect to electronic warfare, continues to be highly indigenized with all the manufacturing done by Russian companies.
