Commenting on the report, an analyst from the team said: “The key purpose of all non-macrocell solutions in a telecom network is to address the inexorable demand for coverage and capacity. Such solutions include small cells, Wi-Fi, DAS, and the emerging CRAN. While the first three solutions have been in the market for a while, the CRAN is a relatively new architecture which, like DAS, concentrates the processing of the RAN of a mobile network in one or more centralized network nodes. These different components are adding to the heterogeneity of the telecom networks around the world. Nowadays, Wi-Fi and small cells are among the most popular solutions for data offloading. As technology continues to evolve, the demand for anytime, anywhere communication is expected to increase steadily. In particular, smartphones are among the most widely used data supported devices at present. In fact, it is projected that by 2016, smartphones will account for more than 67 percent of mobile data traffic. As technologies are evolving, so are the networks that support them. Additionally, the coverage of the macrocell can be improved with the inclusion of a distributed antenna system and CRAN. During the forecast period, there will be huge capital flow for the adoption of small cells, Wi-Fi, DAS, and CRAN infrastructures.”
