Tourist Arrivals Grow Strongly In 2011

Data released by the Indian Ministry of Tourism in January 2012 showed the country maintained high levels of tourist arrivals growth throughout 2011. Over the year as a whole, arrivals grew by 8.9% year-on-year (y-o-y), with arrivals totalling 6.3mn. Growth was particularly strong in the first half of the year, with the highest growth rate being registered in April, when arrivals grew by 17.7% y-o-y. The growth rate dipped slightly towards the end of the year, registering 4.7% and 5.2% in November and December respectively.

India's high growth rate is particularly encouraging given the deteriorating economic environment. One area of concern is the lower growth rate in November and December, when India would generally be heading into its high season.
