Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium
CME Group, Dec 2008
Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University recently conducted the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium.
The 10th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium is intended for individuals actively engaged clinically or scientifically in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, oncology, surgery, gynecology, family practice, and genetics.
Program Description The optimal management of breast cancer is rapidly evolving. A multidisciplinary team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons and genetic counselors are routinely involved in offering treatment recommendations for individual patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer. With the emergence of prevention strategies, women at high risk of developing breast cancer are now evaluated for medical therapies, surgical options and lifestyle changes that may reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. This activity includes a forum of discussions and presentations in laboratory and clinical research concerning the care of patients with breast cancer.
Program Information
Some highlights of the program include:
- Cognitive Dysfunction Following Breast Cancer Therapy - Managing Quality of Life Following Completion of Adjuvant Therapy - Current Issues in HER2 Testing - Screening for Diagnosis: Guidelines forMammography &MRI - Estrogen in the Life and Death of Breast Cancer Cells - The Approach to Reconstruction in the Era of Post Mastectomy Radiotherapy - Predicting Sensitivity to Chemotherapy with Genomic Profiling - DEBATE: The Timing of Sentinel Node Biopsy (SN BX) in the Patient Receiving Neoadjuvant TreatmentBefore Chemotherapy - Disparities in Breast Cancer: Biology or Access - The Conundrum of Sentinel NodeMicrometastases
Educational Objectives
After viewing this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify new treatment strategies for managing cancer-associated pain, learn to communicate compassionately and honestly about disease status and understand ways tomanage the long–term side effects of adjuvant therapy in breast cancer survivors - Describe controversies regarding different HER2 testing methods, understand recent data regarding new prognostic and predictive molecular and clinical markers, identify implications of a diagnosis of lobular carcinoma in situ and describe the issues following a core needle biopsy diagnosis of breast cancer - Describe and understand the optimal systemic therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence in patients with early stage breast cancer - Describe the advances made in identifying patients with genetic abnormalities that increase risk for developing breast cancer - Describe and understand the reconstructive surgical options available to patients with early stage breast cancer - Describe and understand the gene expression patterns in tumor tissue that correlate with response or resistance to anti-cancer therapies - Describe the potential benefits and risks of partial breast irradiation techniques
