About Beer

Beer is considered to be the world's most widely consumed alcoholic beverage. It is also regarded as the third most popular drink, after water and tea. Beer is an alcoholic beverage manufactured by the hydrolysis of starch and fermentation of the obtained sugar. The starch and enzymes are generally obtained from malted cereal grains such as malted barley and malted wheat. In addition, most beer is also flavored with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative; however, other flavorings such as herbs or fruit might be included. This process of preparation of beer is called brewing. In India, beer is one of the fastest growing markets and is highly consumed by the people in India because of their growing disposable income, the increasing young population, and the rapid urbanization taking place in the country.

The analysts forecast the Beer market in India will grow at a CAGR of 16.94 percent and 14.57 percent on the basis of revenue and volume, respectively, over the period 2013-2018.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the team said: “Barley is one of main raw materials required for brewing beer, and it makes up one-sixth of the cost of making beer. Lately, the price of barley has increased by 20 percent because of increasing domestic consumption and export demand. As a result, the cost of beer has increased by 10 percent. Further, a few beer manufacturers have been taking initiatives to support farmers cultivating barley. For instance, SABMiller India is supporting farmers in Rajasthan to cultivate the right type of malt barley required by the Beer industry. It has targeted Rajasthan as it is an ideal place for cultivating barley. The company has also launched a program called Saanji Unnati to educate farmers to sow the right type of certified seeds and utilize modern farming practices. Such initiatives and practices adopted by beer manufacturing companies are likely to increase the production of high-quality barley, which will thereby increase the production of beer in India.”

According to the report, the growth of the Beer market in India is driven by several factors, a major one of which is increasing disposable income. This has driven numerous consumers to buy beer as it becomes easily affordable for them. The increase in disposable income has encouraged the consumption of beer in the southern and western regions in India, as these regions are densely populated and witnessing a change in people's lifestyle.
Further, the report states that one of the major challenges in the market is the restriction on advertising alcoholic beverages in India. This is one of the major issues for beer manufacturers, as they find it very difficult to promote and position their brands.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
