The global pharmaceutical manufacturing industry generates more than $1 trillion in annual revenue. Worldwide spending on medicines is increasing due to economic growth in developing nations and the rising cost of specialty drugs. The US and the EU remain the largest importers of pharmaceuticals, but manufacturers are targeting emerging economies for growth. Key growth opportunities include Brazil, China, India, and Russia (the BRIC nations).
The US pharmaceutical manufacturing industry includes about 2,200 establishments (single-location companies and units of multi-location companies) with combined annual revenue of about $200 billion.
