Analyzing the Mining Industry in Brazil 2013
Aruvian's R'search, January 2013, Pages: 100
The mining industry in Brazil is set for growth in the coming times as untapped natural resources draw significant investments and increase production of key minerals. Iron ore will remain the primary driver of the Brazilian mining sector, while base metals and gold will provide additional opportunities for sector expansion. Furthermore, Chinese demand for Brazilian resources has encouraged mining companies such as Vale to increase efficiency by focusing on vertical integration strategies across processing, freight transport and shipping.
Bauxite, gold, manganese, among other primary mineral products contribute positively to mineral export revenues. The devaluation of the Brazilian Real (as much as 17%) against the US Dollar boosted the country's mineral export earnings, with the iron ore market benefiting the most. Iron ore exports account for 6% of the country's total export revenues.
Brazil is also a major producer of several other key commodities such as gold, coal and phosphates. Mining and mineral products provided almost 2% to Brazil's GDP. Iron ore is the most important of Brazil's mineral exports, generating annual revenue of around $2 billion. Brazil is also the world’s largest exporter of niobium, tin, lithium, tantalum and gemstones. Bauxite, gold, manganese, among other primary mineral products also contribute positively to mineral export revenues. A wide range of geological environments are encountered in the country, with nearly half of the country covered by younger sedimentary successions, which cover extensive Precambrian terrains, some of which is Archaean in age.
Brazilian mining sector, as well as the present pressures on lead times for delivery, the Brazilian mining market presents extraordinary opportunities for international investors and suppliers. Alongside the Brazilian government’s new proposals for regulating the mining industry, a 20-year strategic plan, covering the period 2010 until 2030, has also been tabled to provide a strategic planning tool for the mining industry, putting forward proposals for programs and structuring measures for developing them.
