The home furnishings industry in Vietnam is actively pursuing alternative export destinations in light of sluggish growth in conventional markets.
Suppliers are expanding their clientele in locations such as the Middle East and Asia-Pacifi c region, where demand is surging particularly for upscale models. The strategy has shown encouraging results as overseas revenue in the first half of 2012 rose across all product segments comprising the sector.

Economic partnerships between Vietnam and other developing nations in Asia and Eastern Europe are also seen to further drive up sales in the line.

In addition, the industry’s growth is reinforced by an increasing number of OEM clients. These customers regard Vietnam as a supporting manufacturing center, which complements their established sourcing infrastructure in China.

Key Findings
1. Prices of home furnishings from Vietnam are generally projected to increase over the next six months as a result of burgeoning expenditure for raw materials. Adjustments are expected to be moderate, with most manufacturers raising quotes by no more than 10 percent.

2. Sustained improvement in terms of export performance is forecast over the next 12 months. The majority of suppliers interviewed for this report predict overseas sales to climb by as much as 10 percent. The government also estimates revenue to register modest growth.

3. Slow demand resulting from economic problems affecting major markets is the most crucial challenge affecting the industry. Since many buyers from these areas have tight budgets, they prioritize continually looking for lower quotes over establishing long-term business relationships with Vietnam enterprises. High interest rates levied by local commercial banks are another difficulty facing companies.

4. To avoid competing directly with low-priced China-made models, home furnishings from Vietnam fall mainly under the midrange and high-end segments. Products generally combine traditional modern design aesthetics.

5. The key sourcing centers are located in the Mekong River Delta region, where several types of natural materials are readily available. A number of provinces in the country’s northern and northeastern sections are major hubs for home textiles.

This Vietnam Sourcing Report is part of a series designed to provide buyers with information on new products from export manufacturers in supply markets that specialize in handmade merchandise.

The Developing Country Sourcing Report series is part of Global Sources' corporate social responsibility initiatives. It is offered in conjunction with The Kearny Alliance, whose mission is Aid through Trade.

The objective is to help create jobs in developing Asia through export promotion.

To produce this report, large, midsize and emerging manufacturers, all with substantial export experience, were surveyed. The selection of suppliers is designed to reflect the composition of the industry in Vietnam in terms of geographic location, materials used and range of products offered.

For in-depth profiles, our researchers visited the facilities of each company and interviewed senior executives who discussed their recent performance and provided forecasts for the next 12 months. All other makers in this report were either visited or contacted by phone.

In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to verify their manufacturing and export credentials, including a breakdown of exports by product type and market. Suppliers also participated in a survey designed to provide insight into the industry.

This report covers different types of home furnishings available in Vietnam, including home textiles, bedding, home accents and lighting. Each product category has its own price guide that describes features of models targeted at the low-end, midrange and high-end segments.

The Industry Overview section discusses key issues affecting export manufacturers. It provides insight on the composition of the industry and elaborates on the important supply centers within Vietnam.
