Commenting on the report, an analyst from the team said: “The availability of low-priced tablets and smartphones in the market is expected to drive internet penetration in Thailand. Internet penetration in Thailand was about 36 percent in 2013 and was quite low when compared to other Southeast Asian countries. In 2013, less than 7 percent of the total population of Thailand were subscribed to broadband connections. However, the National Broadband Policy aligned with the Smart Thailand 2020 Master Plan is expected to increase the adoption of the internet in the country, with the goal of creating a 95 percent broadband penetration in the country by 2020.”

According to the report, the initiatives taken by the Thai government toward the promotion of the IT market in Thailand is the most important driver. The Smart Thailand 2020 Master Plan launched by the government focuses on developing the IT infrastructure in the country. The government has taken initiatives to improve internet connectivity in the country and to ensure the involvement of IT in businesses, people, and government entities across the country.

Further, the report states that the increasing piracy in the Software segment of the country is one of the major challenges. In 2012, the piracy rate in software was about 70 percent, which is much higher than the privacy rate across the rest of the world. Though measures are taken by the government to reduce piracy, it will continue to be a major challenge for the growth of the IT market in Thailand in the coming years.
