Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) constitutes more than 4% of the earth’s crust and is found throughout the world. It occurs naturally in the form of marble, limestone and chalk produced by sedimentation of shells of small-fossilized snails and corals over millions of years. All these three forms of calcium carbonate are similar in chemical nature, but differ in physical properties such as whiteness, homogeneity and thickness. Calcium carbonate is available in two forms Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) and Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC). Significant amount of global calcium carbonate produced, is consumed for manufacture of paper and plastics. Additionally, calcium carbonate is utilized in a wide range of applications in paints and coatings, in cement for building and construction industry and as calcium supplement in medical and pharmaceutical industry.

Calcium carbonate used in the form of fillers and extenders in the paper and plastic applications is expected to be driven by these growing end use industries. Calcium carbonate is used in building materials such as cement, adhesives & sealants, etc. Hence, these factors together are expected to fuel the demand for calcium carbonate globally. However, adverse effects of excessive consumption of calcium carbonate in the form of drugs could hamper the demand for calcium carbonate. To counter the above mentioned factor, health associations have compiled a review of health risks associated with excessive consumption of calcium carbonate and set up a daily tolerance intake level of calcium based on age. Key players are now focusing on innovations and developments to improve product performance, enhance physical properties and reduce production cost.

Asia Pacific is the largest and second fastest growing market at a CAGR of 4.4% in terms of volume demand of GCC and PCC, from 2013 and 2019. Emerging countries such as China and India are leading the growth in this region. North America accounted for 20.7% of the total market of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate demand in Europe accounted for 20.5 million tons in 2012 which is expected to show moderate growth by 2019, owing to the growing non-traditional end use industries and pharmaceutical industry among others.

GCC is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.9% for the forecast period of 2013 to 2019 due to its applications in the non-traditional end use industries and also in paper, plastic, paints and coatings. PCC is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.9% owing to its specific properties which include whiteness, brightness and opaque visibility among others. It is also used as raw material in a new technology that is Synthetic Calcium Carbonate (SCC) which is known for its high purity and hence widely used in the pharmaceutical sector.

GCC is available in both coarse as well as fine in size and PCC is generally fine in size. The calcium carbonate products are priced based on the different size grades of GCC and PCC. GCC is readily available and cheaper to produce whereas PCC is fine in size and has definite properties which have applications in various industries such paper, plastics, pharmaceuticals and paints and coatings among others. Few factors that are expected to affect the global calcium carbonate prices include rising production cost, enhanced product efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Some of the major players producing calcium carbonate include, Imerys, Omya AG. Minerals Technologies and Excalibar Minerals among others. These manufacturers produce various types of calcium carbonate which include GCC and PCC that are applicable in various industries.
