Household Furniture Market Report 2012

Key Note Publications Ltd, November 2012, Pages: 63

This Key Note Market Update examines the household furniture industry in the UK. In 2011, it rose by 1.7%, following 3 years of decline, due to the impact of the 2008/2009 recession.

The domestic furniture industry is diverse. This report breaks down the market according to room type. The living room category is the largest sector and increased the most in value in 2011, growing by 2%. This is because it is where consumers spend the majority of their leisure time at home, regardless of whether they are relaxing or entertaining. Meanwhile, the dining room segment rose by 1.9%, as a result of increasing numbers of consumers choosing to entertain at home. The other three categories: bedroom, kitchen and other furniture segments, all grew by 1.4%, respectively. The is because Britons are increasingly choosing larger, more luxurious beds, in addition to statement pieces in their bedrooms, while consumers are also opting to cook out of both necessity and for pleasure, and consequently, are investing in their kitchens to maximise the experience. The other furniture segment is gaining importance in the market due to the rise in office furniture as more Britons choose to work from home.

Under the financial strains of the economic crisis, many Britons can no longer afford to buy property. As a result, they have begun to invest in their current homes instead. This enables them to upgrade their social status without actually having to move properties. Moreover, consumers are spending a greater amount of time at home in order to save money during the downturn. As they are spending more time at home, Britons want a peaceful haven to relax in. As such, they are investing in quality furniture that reflects their personal tastes and individual needs instead. These are deemed a long-term investment.

However, competition in the household furniture market is intense. Not only do manufacturers compete among themselves, but the number of cheap imports, especially from the Far East, is rising. This has resulted in heavy promotional activity in the industry. Although consumers want quality furniture, their primary concern is value. Thus, manufacturers have invested in offers and promotions to remain competitive. However, this has limited market growth in the industry.

Key Note expects that the household furniture industry in the UK will continue to increase over the next 5 years. Between 2012 and 2016, it will rise by 10.3%. Continuing demand for furniture — as consumers invest in their homes — will be the main reason for this growth. However, heavy promotional activity and rising production costs mean that the industry will be unable to recover the whole of its pre-recession value.
