The Market for Gas Power Plants in Europe

In the next five years, the European market for gas-fired power plants will grow like never before. About 160 gas-fired power plants will be constructed or extended between 2011 and 2015. The capacity of the European gas-fired power plants will increase by 66 GW – from about 176 GW to 242 GW, which represents a market volume of almost 43 billion euros.

The main reason for this boom is the fact that more and more fossil power plants will have to be replaced. This holds especially true for coal-fired power plants, which are in many cases not only out of date but also increasingly criticised due to their high CO2 emissions. The nuclear phase-out in Germany, which is one of the largest markets, will result in a growing need for alternatives as well. Furthermore, new power plants should compensate the unsteady electricity generation from renewable energy sources in a best possible way.
