The Transport Research Laboratory released this week its research projects for the 2016/17 year, and the list featured a strong technological focus. From cybersecurity to automated vehicles, today’s blog picks four of the most interesting project topics.
Cybersecurity and the Internet of Things
A large number of industries, including the transport industry, are exploring the benefits offered by the Internet of Things (IoT), which enables devices to communicate data to one another through network connectivity. As a result, the need for resilient cybersecurity grows to ensure that transport systems and vehicles are protected from criminal intent.
Machine learning allows computers to learn new information without being programmed explicitly to do so. It stands to greatly benefit the transport industry by permitting the self-learning of massive sets of transport data in minimal time. This information can then be used to improve the safety, efficiency and capabilities of transport networks.
The past few years have seen an increase in focus on mental health across a variety of sectors, and now the transport industry is exploring the way in which transport systems can impact and improve mental health, with the goal of identifying future countermeasures and interventions for the benefit of all road and rail users.
Automated Vehicles and Truck Platooning
The transport industry is currently preparing itself for the widespread adoption of automated vehicles both for personal and business use. The research will explore how the occupant protection characteristics of vehicles will need to evolve to protect passengers from the potential risks that come with automated driving. Similarly, the research into truck platooning will explore how the use of automated trucks will impact the infrastructure of transport networks.
