Amazon’s latest piece of technology is a smart home security camera called Amazon Cloud Cam that works with its voice assistant Alexa to monitor your home from anywhere. The in-home delivery service will be available in 37 cities across the U.S. and will be rolling out to more locations over time.
The Cloud Cam will work with the company’s Amazon Key smart door lock and its new Key app.
The Key app will let you grant access to guests even when you’re not at home. The ecommerce giant says the service will eventually allow users to schedule in-home visits from more than 1,200 businesses, including house cleaners and dog walkers.
Amazon Key works by alerting the customer on their phone when a driver arrives. The driver scans the package to ensure they are the right address at the right time. A signal is then sent to the Amazon Cloud that verifies the driver. The user can track and watch the delivery on one of their devices, or review the footage at a later time. The Amazon Cloud Cam then starts recording and the door is unlocked.
“Cloud Cam has all the features you need to monitor your home, including a 1080p Full HD camera, night vision, two-way audio, and free storage for clips–and with the secure AWS cloud powering Cloud Cam’s advanced computer algorithms and intelligent alerts, the service is always getting smarter,” said Charlie Tritschler, Vice President, Amazon Devices, in a statement.
“Amazon verifies that the correct driver is at the right address, at the intended time, through an encrypted authentication process. Once this process is successfully completed, Amazon Cloud Cam starts recording and the door is then unlocked. No access codes or keys are ever provided to delivery drivers.”
Customers can pay extra for subscription services that offer longer access to video clips. Prices range from $7 to $20 a month, depending on how long clips can be viewed and from how many cameras. Prime members can preorder the Cloud Cam and a compatible lock starting from $249.99. On its own, the Cloud Cam alone starts at $119.99.
