CDC to Move Towards Voluntary Guidelines for Cruise Lines

14 January 2022

Cruise lines that operate in the United States will soon be allowed to opt in to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. The conditional sailing order which expires on Saturday included compulsory measures like requiring vaccination for a certain percentage of passengers and crew; tests before boarding for passengers and regular testing for crew; and mask-wearing indoors unless eating or drinking. Under the new voluntary program, the agency will continue to recommend the same measures.

Even operators that don’t opt to follow the recommendations will have to report coronavirus cases and follow the public transportation mask mandate which has been extended until March. The CDC will also be able to investigate outbreaks and issue no-sail orders. The move to a voluntary approach has been criticized by some in Congress particularly as the highly infectious omicron variant has caused cases to spike. However, the Cruise Lines International Association responded that cruise lines operating in Florida have already been following the conditional sailing order voluntarily since last summer. In addition, many cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International have responded to the surge in cases by canceling planned cruises.
