Lumber Prices Down From Record High

03 September 2021

The price of lumber decreased in mid August to levels not seen since the middle of 2020. Lumber traded at $462.20 per thousand board feet on August 17, down from the record high of $1,686 per thousand board feet on May 7. Lumber prices have experienced ups and downs during the COVID-19 pandemic. A growing interest in DIY among locked down consumers drove increasing demand for lumber as mill closures and logistical challenges decreased supplies. Lumber prices fell from the mid-$400s in January to $264 in late April 2020 before surging to $948 in September. The price then dropped to $495 in late October before starting a fairly steady climb to the record set on May 7.

It is likely that Lumber distributors will be impacted by the pandemic-driven focus on resilient supply chains. Industry experts report that greater emphasis is being placed on flexibility over cost reduction. Distributors’ customers may prefer to hold higher inventory levels on site rather than rely on just-in-time principles and choose to avoid relying on wholesalers who import products from abroad. They may also work with more wholesalers to ensure that they can meet their own customers’ demand even though concentrating orders among a smaller number of suppliers typically lowers cost.
