This paper summarizes our recent research in the market for cellular telephones. As the United States market has matured and evolved the number of cell phone subscribers has skyrocketed from less than 50 million as recently as ten years ago to more than 250 million at the present time. The growth in wireless subscriptions has been paralleled by growth in logistics requirements and the service market.

Technological change and the business practices of the major wireless carriers have led to a very short life cycle for a new handset in the United States. The vast majority of retired handsets are tucked in drawer and forgotten. Since the prices of new handsets are heavily subsidized by the wireless carriers the consumer sees very little value in an old handset.

This paper begins with a discussion of the market for new handsets and the service requirements associated with the handsets in use at any given time. We then proceed to a discussion of the market for retired handsets. This section is followed by a comprehensive examination of the competition in the service and recycling markets. Finally we conclude with a detailed set of competitive profiles.
