This Limited Publication Study provides an in-depth understanding of the market for Gas-insulated Switchgear (GIS), excluding other types of switchgear with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) breakers in Mainland China. There are ten separate voltage ratings in the market, which are categorized as medium voltage (also referred to as cabinet GIS) and high voltage. The report is based on a study of the production, sales, distribution and application of these products across all regions of China, in their predominant customer industry sectors (target market). Included is a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the market’s size, trends, development, key participants and opportunities.

China’s market for gas-insulated switchgear has grown steadily throughout 2009 and continues to grow its share of the world’s total demand. Despite, tightening restrictions on sulphur-hexafluoride, the insulating gas, the next few years will witness a further expansion of this market as China’s grid is modernized and expanded to meet the nation’s power needs and supply constraints. Almost all of the major international players are in this market and within the competing blocs of Japan, Europe and the U.S.A., GIS suppliers are forging alliances with local companies with ties to state owned production and T&D.

This market study draws on a three month, in-depth primary survey of around 100 of the market’s supply side and channel players. A detailed understanding of 10 medium and high voltage products across five applications in Mainland China. A comprehensive map of the competitive landscape is provided to those needing knowledge of the accessible parts of this giant market.

Grid Modernization will make China the Largest Gas-insulated Switchgear Market in the World after 2010

GCiS China Strategic Research has published a study of the China market for Gas-insulated Switchgear (GIS). Medium and high-voltage sulphur hexafluoride-insulated switchgear is quantified for multiple industry and regional segments nationwide between 2009 and 2014.

The study finds that market demand, currently estimated at a third of the world’s total, will grow by an average of 12% per year over the next five years on the massive modernization package that the Chinese government is rolling out for the nation’s grid. At this growth rate, the Chinese market is expected to become the world’s largest after 2010.

How much of this market is available to all suppliers is harder to quantify. European and Japanese GIS manufacturers, some of which received a nearly one billion dollar antitrust fine from the EC in 2006, enjoy close relationships with state-owned T&D entities like the State Grid Corp. “Much of the existing grid has been built on technology transfer from European and Japanese power giants,” said Edward Barlow, GCiS senior analyst and author of the study. “With the next phase of modernization underway, the customers at the Grid and in the government will turn to these companies for the tenders,” Barlow added. “Typically in a Chinese quasi-monopsony, market share is often predetermined.”
