Trends

Internet retailing saw the best performance in retailing in the US in 2016. Its performance was due to increasing demand for convenience, its large inventory and competitive prices. Over the review period many store-based retailers focused on expanding into internet retailing or strengthening their position in the channel. As a result, retailers supported their internet strategies with mobile apps that can be used to compare prices, receive discounts and check order status, amongst other benefits. Mobile devices continue to gain popularity for buying products online. Consumers can purchase products on-the-go, and do not have to visit a retailer during certain hours of operation. Internet retailers benefited from this trend and further encouraged consumers to shop through mobile devices by offering a variety of benefits.

Competitive Landscape

Third party merchants continued to lead internet retailing with a 34% share of retail value sales in 2016. These are businesses which sell products via the websites of internet retailers such as Amazon, eBay and Wal-Mart, to name a few. Over the review period the importance of such merchants increased, as their sales rose substantially. Third party merchants enable internet retailers to save money in terms of warehousing and shipping, but more importantly give their platforms a much wider product range. However, the results of this marketplace approach vary for different companies. For instance, Best Buy decided to close its third party marketplace. The company will focus on supporting the growth of its website instead.
