Morocco's mobile market is one of the more mature in the region, with penetration rate of about 121% by the end of 2017. All three mobile network operators also offer fixed-line or fixed-wireless services. They have developed mobile data services based on the extensive reach of LTE infrastructure, in turn supported by the popular use of smartphones. Indeed the mobile operators have become the main providers of internet services, accounting for the vast majority of all internet connections. The issue of LTE licences use in 2015 included conditions to ensure that services covered at least 65% of the population by 2020. This infrastructure, and the fast subscriber take-up, will further consolidate the dominance in mobile players in the broadband sector.

The principal telco, the incumbent Maroc Telecom, has undergone a strategic review following its acquisition of Etisalat's mobile businesses in several markets in the region. These additional international markets are providing a welcome boost to the company's overall revenue.

This report analyses Morocco's mobile telephony sector, including statistics, assessments of recent regulatory measures, details on licensing regimes and spectrum auctions, and profiles of the major players.

Key Developments:

Regulator awards LTE spectrum to the three MNOs at auction; MNP process amended to hasten number portings; Maroc Telecom launches LTE-A services; Méditel completes rebranding as Orange Morocco; Central Bank expecting full m-payment services by end-2018; Etisalat sells its West African mobile operations to Maroc Telecom for 650 million; new SIM card registration regulations take effect; report updates include the regulator's market data to December 2017, telcos' financial and operating data to Q4 2017, recent market developments.
