Iran's moderate president, Hassan Rouhani, will remain under severe pressure, as the economy continues to suffer from the impact of US sanctions. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects Mr Rouhani to be replaced by a hardliner in 2021.

Tensions between the US and Iran will remain high, given Iran's decision to step up its nuclear programme and the recent exchange of hostilities. Negotiations between them are unlikely, at least until after the US presidential election in 2020.

We expect the fiscal account to register large deficits in 2020-24 as proposed cuts to current spending are delayed in order to appease protesters and as government revenue continues to be squeezed by the impact of US sanctions.
