Parliament was dissolved in March in preparation for an early election, which does not need to be held until December 2020. Having postponed the election twice owing to health concerns, the Election Commission plans to hold it on August 5th.

We expect the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party, led by Mahinda Rajapaksa, to secure a parliamentary majority. The party is well placed to do so following the swell of support for the leader's brother, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, at the presidential poll in 2019.

The budget deficit will widen to the equivalent of 8.5% of GDP in 2020, on the back of a sharp drop in revenue collection. We expect a gradual improvement in 2021-24, but the budget deficit will remain large in comparison with historical standards.
