The president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, is in poor health, and the succession of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan is possible before 2023, but it will be smooth. Domestic political stability will be maintained, as the ruling family maintains tight control.

Hostility between the UAE and Iran will persist, creating regional tensions and damaging trade. The UAE will maintain a military role in the Yemen war, as The Economist Intelligence Unit does not expect international mediation efforts there to result in peace.

We expect the Gulf Co-operation Council to gradually fracture; with two new regional alliances forming as Qatar and the quartet-the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt-have deepened mistrust since the diplomatic boycott of Qatar began in June 2017.
