The domestic political standing of the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, will remain strong, despite the ongoing boycott of Qatar by four Arab states, which The Economist Intelligence Unit expects to continue over the 2019-23 forecast period.

Qatar's tense relations with some Arab states will persist while it builds stronger ties with Iran and Turkey. However, Qatar will try to maintain positive relations with Western governments by tightening lax anti-terrorism legislation.

Excluding with the four boycotting countries (Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt), normal trade will not be disrupted by the boycott. Government spending will stay high, supporting economic growth averaging about 2.8% a year in 2019-23.
