The president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional, will see his popularity slip, given a late and bungled response to the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Nevertheless, grow-ing public disenchantment with the president-partly arising from lacklustre progress on combating Mexico's intractable social ills, including crime and poverty-will be curbed by the president's rhetoric on high-profile corruption cases. Although the June 2021 mid-term elections will be competitive, the opposition remains weak.

Mr López Obrador has made modest headway in boosting living standards for Mexico's poorest, but The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the pandemic to slow further progress; the health crisis and high levels of polarisation before the 2021 elections will sap energy for policymaking.

Following a sharp contraction in 2020, real GDP will recover only modestly in 2021, owing to still weak investor confidence in the administration and a lack of fiscal stimulus. Growth will average 2.3% in 2022-25 as domestic and external conditions improve. However, the balance of risks is tilted to the downside.
