The Mexican economy is the second-largest in Latin America and is among the most open in the world, with 13 free-trade agreements (FTAs) covering more than 50 countries. It is highly integrated with the US economy, leaving it vulnerable to shifts in the US business cycle.

The president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), remains popular, despite a poor coronavirus (Covid-19) response. Facing a weak opposition, Morena is likely to maintain its majority in the June mid-term elections.

The government's energy policy agenda will be a major flashpoint in 2021-22, as Mr López Obrador will endeavour to bring rents from the country's natural resources and energy sector under state control. This will temper investor interest and generate uncertainty.
